Amniotic Membrane

What is an amniotic membrane?

Amniotic membrane is a thin layer of tissue from the placenta that can be used to treat corneal and conjunctival conditions. These medical devices are natural and suture-less treatment options that can help heal and regenerate the front surface of the eye.

What are amniotic membranes used for?

Amniotic membranes are an effective treatment option for ocular surface disorders affecting the cornea and conjunctiva. They help promote faster healing, reduce inflammation, and minimize scarring. These membranes are commonly used for conditions such as severe dry eye, corneal ulcers, recurrent corneal erosions, chemical burns, and corneal abrasions.

What does amniotic membrane feel like?

The membrane, roughly the size of the iris, is gently placed directly onto the cornea, with a bandage contact lens applied over it. The sensation is similar to wearing a soft contact lens. This suture-free membrane is designed to gradually dissolve on its own within about a week. While in place, vision through the membrane may appear slightly cloudy, which is why treatment is typically done one eye at a time.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the amniotic membrane?

Generally, medical insurance covers the cost of the amniotic membrane placement. Our insurance coordinator will confirm coverage details.
